Childhood and background
Andrei Chikatilo was a born on 16 October, 1936 and died on 14 February, 1994. Chikatilo was a Soviet serial killer, who has killed a minimum of 53 women and children in the time period of 12 years from 1978 and 1990. He was nicknames as the butcher of Rostov, the red ripper, and the Rostov ripper. Although he has been convicted for 52 murders, he has been tried for 53 of his killings in April 1992. One of the murders did not have sufficient evidence resulting him not being convicted for that murder. Chikatilo has confessed to 56 murders. He was convicted for 52 murders in October 1992, and was executed in February 1994.
Chikatilo was born in the village of Yabluchne in the Sumy Oblast of the Ukrainian SSR during Joseph Stalin’s regime. He was born with a disease that caused him nearsightedness along with brain lesions and was born with water in his brain. During the time period in which he was born in, there was a famine that was happening in the USSR, and there was an ongoing war with Germany. This cause Chikatilo to grow up in a time period where starvation and deaths that were common occurrences.
Chikatilo grew up living in a one room hut with both his parents and eventually a sister. His parents were struggling financially, being farmer workers at that time, because of the famine. As a result of this, Chikatilo lived in tight living quarters, in the same bed as his parents slept in. This lead to violence and humiliation of him because he was a chronic bed wetter, believed to be a side effect of brain lesions. Chikatilo would get beat regularly, because of his bed wetting habits. Every time he had an accident his mother would give him beatings as means of punishment. It was discovered later in life that he was born with brain damage that had affected his ability to control his seminal and bladder emissions. In addition to the physical trauma, Andrea Chikatilo also had to deal with the emotional trauma that was handed to him. At the age of five, his mother told him what had happened to this older brother, Stepan, which he was taken by the neighbours and was cannibalized because of the famine.
Chikatilo’s father, Roman, was drafted to fight for the USSR as the World War II prolonged. His father was gone for months because he had faced an injury when fighting the Germans, and was later captured by them. Throughout the war Chikatilo had to live through the traumas that Blitzkrieg, an attack strategy used by the army, had caused on both him and his mother. His mother and he were forced to watch their hut being incinerated. Between 1941 and 1944, Chikatilo had witnessed some of the effects of the Nazi. He witnessed bombings, fires and shootings from which he and his mother would hide in ditches and cellars. In 1943, Chikatilo’s mother gave birth to a baby girl, Tatyana. Chikatilo’s father had been enrolled in the war, thus could not have fathered the child. It had been believed that the child was conceived through the means of rape that was committed by a German Soldier. His father, when returned from the war, was not given any rewards, but instead was punished for being captured by the Germans and surrendering himself to them.
At the age of 15 or 16, Chikatilo had his first sexual experience. This had occurred when he leaped on to a girl that was 12 years old and wrestled her to the ground. He was sexually aroused while was pinning her to the ground and it was when she was resisting that had ejaculated.
Later on in his life, he was taken pity upon on by his sister because of his lack of success with women. His sister, Tatyana, set him up with her friend named Fayina, whom he later on married. When he was with her, he discovered that he had erectile dysfunction. Even though he was unable to get an erection, he had still managed to conceive two children, one boy and one girl. The first was a daughter whom they had named Lyudmila and the second was a son that they named Yuri.
He had lived a seemingly normal life to his family. He received a degree in Russian literature and became a teacher. Chikatilo was an ineffective teacher; he was teased and harassed by his students because of his modest nature. As the bullying did not stop, he was scared of his students which resulted in him to lose respect for his students and not being able to control his classrooms. He ended up molesting some of his female students, resulting in him losing his position as a teacher. Chikatilo’s career as a teacher ended in March 1981 after several complaints against him of child molestations against his students of both sexes. When his teaching career ended, he found a new career, working at a factory as a supply clerk.
